Stephen J. Foland

Stephen Foland works as a litigation attorney, focusing largely on tort defense cases as well as commercial and regulatory matters.

The son and grandson of career railroad men, Stephen has substantial experience of his own in the railroad industry, acquired as a trainmaster with Norfolk Southern and Soo Line at various freight terminals in the Midwest.  As a law student, he clerked at the Federal Railroad Administration and worked in the legal department at Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing North America.  After his admission to the bar, he acquired substantial experience in trial litigation as an assistant district attorney and in private practice in New Mexico.  He prosecuted crimes ranging from shoplifting and drunk driving to robbery and murder, obtaining guilty verdicts (and occasional acquittals) in numerous jury and bench trials; represented private clients in civil litigation; and completed academic studies of railroad law in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
